Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo to early Meiji period, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A fine Shigaraki stoneware vase with a textured and pleasantly tactile surface - a high-temperature firing process contributes to the distinctive appearance - the gritty mixture of sand, feldspar, and trace metals fire to a deep red-brown or golden-red, as seen in this example. Shigaraki is a traditional style of Japanese ceramics that originated in the Shigaraki region of Shiga Prefecture and dates back over 1,200 years, and embodies the aesthetic principles of wabi-sabi, which values simplicity, imperfection, and natural beauty.
