Item Details
Description
Marie S. Juanico (Native American, Acoma Pueblo, b. 1937). Polychrome jar with parrots, n.d. Signed "Marie Juanico / Acoma Sky City, / N.M." on underside of base. A stunning pottery jar made by Acoma potter Marie Juanico. Finely painted in hues of white, black, orange, and beige, the voluminous vessel features mesmerizing designs with 2 parrots surrounded by hatched and filled geometric motifs reminiscent of textile decoration. The shape of the vase is quite elegant in form, presenting a broad shoulder that slopes upward to an annular rim, all sitting upon a narrow, concave base. Size: 9" Diameter x 8.1" H (22.9 cm x 20.6 cm)

Marie S. Juanico was born to Acoma Pueblo parents Toribio and Delores Sanchez in September 1937. Like her sisters, Ethel Shields and Katherine Lewis, she learned to make pottery through watching and working with their mother. Though Marie primarily makes traditional Acoma-style pottery, her vessels often take on shapes of their own as she is coiling them, and she will decide on contemporary or traditional decoration based on the outcome of the form. Marie's expertise shows in the number of ribbons she has earned from the Santa Fe Indian Market, the New Mexico State Fair, and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial. Her work is shown in the Indian Craft Shop at the US Department of the Interior in Washington, DC. Her work is also prominent in the private collections of Allan & Carol Hays, John Blom, and Drs. Judith & Richard Lasky, among others.
