Only 100 copies bound thus for foreign distribution, with additional plates, per Monaghan 881. A massive compilation of the official condolences expressed by foreign officials across the globe. The frontispiece is a mounted photograph of Frederick Halpin's engraving of Francis Bicknell Carpenter's 1864 life portrait of Lincoln. A mounted photo of Marshall's engraving of Lincoln faces page 320, and another mounted photograph of Frederick Seward faces page 680, in addition to engraved portrait plates of Lincoln (by Darby & Miller) and Wiliam Seward. The trade edition has only the Darby & Miller engraving as a frontispiece portrait. Provenance: Swann sale, 18 October 1962 (catalog 602), lot 262, to the late husband of the consignor.
