Title: GURO Zamle ritual mask of a horned creature, Ivory Coast
Date: prior to 1949
Medium: carved wood polychromed mask
Dimensions: 14.5 inches tall
Provenance: "Kindred McLeary, (American Texas 1901-1949); Gifted to his colleague at Carnegie Mellon University, Samuel Rosenberg (American 1896-1972) an early adopter of Modernist Painting; A by descent through the Rosenberg Family; Kindred McLeary is primarily known as an architect; however, his skills extended to teaching fine art as well as painting, murals and set design. McLeary was born in Weimar, Texas in 1901, graduated from high school and then moved to Austin, Texas to study architecture at the University of Texas. During his time at the University, McLeary traveled to France to study at the American School of Fine Arts, Fontainebleau where he studied under Jean Carlu. McLeary returned to Austin and received a degree in architecture followed by work in Florida and New York. In 1926, McLeary assisted Jean Carlu with a mural in Boston and helped execute murals on the ceiling of the Ziegfield Theater in New York. Murals by him are also on the ceiling of the Landa House in San Antonio, the U.S. Post Office in South Norwalk, Connecticut, and the Madison Square Post Office at 23rd Street between Lexington and Third Avenues in New York City. In 1927, he joined the architecture faculty at the University of Texas, but was asked to leave at the end of the year because he was making home brew during Prohibition times. The next year he joined the architecture faculty of the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh and remained there until his death.
