S-28 Large Nazi banner that flew in the Nurnberg Stadium during Hitler's massive rallies. 60" diameter black printed swastika on a white disc, sewn to a red field. Reinforced corner. Border is stamped "Stadt Nurnberg" and corner is stamped "Z.R.N." Sleeve still has the original rope/loop and a double metal swivel ring. 113" x 106". Accompanying the flag are the following : (1) Original letter - "Nurnberg battles 19-20 April 1945." Albro tells the story of approaching a farmhouse near Nurnberg, helping some civilians with food and in turn being taken to the famous stadium by a caretaker. This is "where the large Nazi flags were stored for Hitler's rallies - they lead us to a side door where he had large keys to open the locks...we entered to a long inside walkway...at a corner where a staircase went up to the large open balcony...he opened a large metal door and inside this room, were stored a large number of large Nazi flags...and were marked Nurnberg flags. I grabbed one of the large ones and our guys cleaned out all the others." (2) April 22, 1945 souvenir "CERTIFICATE" issued to Albro which lists "1 Nazi flag." (3) V-Mail dated 26 April 1945. Content includes "I LIBERATED A HUGE NAZI FLAG THE OTHER DAY...IT IS A VERY VALUABLE SOUVENIR AS IT HAS A STORY BEHIND IT WHICH I MAY BE ABLE TO TELL YOU ABOUT LATER ON." (4) A typed account to his parents, how Albro "liberated" a huge Nazi flag. He mentions it being taken from the stadium at Nurnberg "...the place where Hitler made all his important speeches and the annual party congress was held..." (5) May 31, 1945 edition of the "Liverpool Review" - article titled "Albro Sends Parents Flag Used for Hitler Speeches." (6) Newspaper clipping from "THE POST-STANDARD," dated May 27, 1945. Article titled "Liverpool GI Sends Parents Flag from Nurnberg Shrine Used for Hitler Ceremonies." (7) Age darkened ID card titled "Stadium flag taken from Nurnberg, Germany" was used when Albro displayed his souvenirs after WWII. (8) Copy wartime photo of Albro.
