Author: Lee, John D.. Binding: Hard Cover. Publishing Place: St. Louis. Year: 1878. Cloth, octavo, p. 406, 13 black & white plates; this is the third printing, not noted by most bibliographers. Howes Final Edition L 206; Wright Howes notes the first two printings in 1877, treating them as issues of one printing, and notes the next printing as 1881. Six-Guns 1311, stating "rare"; here Ramon Adams notes the two printings in 1877, but like Howes states the next printing occurred in 1881. But see Flake 4853 in the second edition of the Mormon Bibliography; here Chad Flake does note this 1878 edition as the third printing. A scarce and desirable book in a clean and sound copy---but one that has seen a whole lot of use. The top board has the margins darkened, and shows moderate to general heavy rubbing; there is some irregular fading to about one-third of the surface. The spine is quite darkened and shows heavy general rubbing, but the gilt lettering is still legible. There are a couple of small spots of lightening; and for about one inch at the extremities there is heavy rubbing and wear, and some splitting of the cloth. The bottom board has moderate rubbing and scratching and some light soiling. All of the corners are rubbed through, and about half the length of the for-edges of the top boards show rubbing through the cloth. The book has its original yellow endpapers; the rear hinge is completely split, but the mull is holding well, and the book is still soundly bound. The front endpaper has the lower corner gone, and has a previous owner's inscription. The first three leaves have a heavy brownish discoloration at the top, which appears to be foxing. This is an area perhaps 3 inches long and one-and-one-half inches wide at its most extensive. The text shows very little foxing. Condition: Good
