Description
AN INTERESTING GILT METAL REPOUSSÉ RUSSIAN ICON OF THE THREE HIERARCHS, CIRCA 1800. While not completely unknown in Russian iconography, a complete image in high relief sculpted in repoussé more commonly originate in Greece, nevertheless, examples such as the offered lot, were clearly made in Russia, and as illustrated here, are a testament to the almost entirely lost art of repoussé. At center the three saints, each identified by the name inscribed within their halo are shown holding a chalice. Each is dressed as a bishop, all wearing a mitre and two wearing a pilitsa. From the left they are Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom-“The golden-mouthed.” They are framed within an ornate baroque setting with scrolling foliage, shell forms and at top center, a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Mounted on a velvet covered board. In an excellent state of preservation. 10.5 inches x 8 inches (27 x 20 cm).
