IMPORTANT ZANESVILLE OHIO LILY PAD CREAMER
IMPORTANT ZANESVILLE OHIO LILY PAD CREAMER
Item Details
Description
4 ¼”h., Sea green, non-lead, pear shaped body, with super imposed gather tooled into an unknown variant, type 1, Lily pad design, unseen technique with applied horizontal threading over the Lily pad decoration, applied semi-ear shape handle crimped at the base, applied heavy conical petal foot, pontil scarred base; c. 1815-22 , probably the Zanesville Glass Manufacturing Company, or J .Shepard & Co., Zanesville Ohio, possibly New Geneva , Pa., cracked in the making extending from the lower handle attachment to the base on one side, showcasing mint. This is the first and only indisputable Midwestern Lily pad example that we know of. There is no other example that we could acknowledge or make reference to. This creamer belongs to a small group of green glass, all of which is attributed to Zanesville, all, with the identical style petal foot. Unlike the eastern petal foot, which is flat, using nine or more petals, the Zanesville petal foot has a thick gather of glass, conical in shape, with a smaller number of petals that practically rest on their sides. As Zanesville glass progresses, improving all the while, the petal foot become more intricate and departs even further away from its MidAtlantic counterpart. The last and final incarnation can be seen on the elaborate round bodied ten diamond sugar bowls and creamers, the petals are poised downward resting on the edge of the petals. This creamer is historic in regard to the history of American Glass making. No one has ever heard of a Zanesville, or even a Pittsburgh lily pad creamer or pitcher, until now; ex. David Good collection, found in Ohio.
Condition
Crack at lower handle running on one side down along the foot, however the example showcases mint.
