China, Guangxu period (1875-1908)
HU form in archaistic shape
Applied with a lustrous teadust glaze???? imitating a bronze patina
Bulbous body on an oval foot rim
The wall is decorated with a geometric pattern under the glaze
Two handles in the shape of dragon heads flank the sides of the neck
Base with a six-character Guangxu mark
Height: 29.5 cm

The vase is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear such as chips on the mouth rim. The height measures 29.5 cm.



HU

HU means ‘jar’ in Chinese and refers to an ancient bronze vessel shape, which originated during the Shang period (c. 1600-1045 BC). It is characterized by a pear-shaped body with a flared neck. Common decorations weretaotie masks as well as leiwen thunder patterns and later also animal and geometric motifs. HU jars traditionally served as a wine vessels for ritual uses and were stored in tombs filled with food and wine for the afterlife.
