Description
This circa 1880 oil painting on academy board shows life and commerce along the Hudson river. The details are fabulous: a train; sail boats and log rafts populate the view. It is painted in the popular Hudson River School style, but the artist is not fully skilled. The landscape and sky are beautiful and smooth, but the rendering of boats and details is tight and almost drawn in. The painting is a document of the artist's observations, and the details were very important! Painting size: 12.5" x 18.5" Frame : 17.5" x 23.5" When we acquired it, the painting was warped and coming out of the frame. It was also badly scraped and dirty. In several areas the paint was missing. (See the photos.) The painting was flattened, cleaned and in-painted, and replaced in the original ornate period frame. The frame was cleaned and given a light coat of translucent gold mica to perk it up. The painting was coated with non-yellowing gloss varnish. All work was performed in our studio.
