Rare Nine-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Iron Slip Decoration, attributed to Thomas Chandler, Edgefield, SC, circa 1850, large-sized, ovoid jar with flared rim and applied tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed looping drape design in iron slip. Additional looping line decoration under each handle. This example is potted in an exceptionally-rare and visually-stunning nine-gallon size. Relatively few Chandler examples of the gallonage are known. Some restoration to body, not affecting decoration. Significant restoration to one handle. Restoration to edge of opposite handle. Restoration to areas of rim. H 18 1/2".
