Item Details
Description
(Leiden 1613-1675) Circle of Gerard Dou. Dutch School. Oil on Canvas. Certainly, initially brought to England when acquired on the Grand Tour sometime in the 18th Century. A painting of similar description was offered in Christies in May 1819. Provenance was asserted through Christies Auction House London 1920. It was purchased Venduhuis der Notarissen. Den Haag 1952.The overall style and type can be compared to Dou. A large number of Dutch and Flemish painters worked in this genre and are typically similar in execution, see also: Dominicus van Tol who was born in Bodegraven. He was a nephew of Gerard Dou and his works often draw comparison with those of his uncle. In 1664 he became a member of the Leiden Guild of St. Luke and in 1670 he got married and moved to Utrecht. He is known for being a fijnschilder.
