Description
Okimono, ivory. Japan, Meiji Period
Very well-crafted sculptural okimono, depicting one of the Shichi Fukujin (Seven Gods of Luck) - patron of the fisher, the deity Ebisu, whose characteristics are pointed beard, cap, fishing pole and, above all, the bass tai. Has just caught it and it is lying – very lifelike – on the rocky ground. Animated facial features, also nicely worked is the clothing with some patterns. Beneath the base, red inlaid signature SHO-UN.
