Description
The high relief carving represents three vignettes of an opera in a military theme. It is most likely based on the popular Ming Dynasty novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a fictional account of a period in Chinese history. Featured in the center are two equestrians dressed as high ranking generals engaged in combat. The entire panel is carved out of a single plank of wood. The panel was originally painted in pastel colors and highlighted in gilt. Some of the original paints remain, the rest has been re-gilded. The is a good example of wood carving from Fujian Province in Southeast China. Skilled woodworkers were famous for their depictions of human figures to the minute details. The facial expressions on the warriors are quite lively. A mid 19 century date for this lintel is appropriate.
