Description
[New World/Caribbean] MAPA HISTORICO PINTORESCO MODERNO DE LA ISLA DE CUBA. [Bernardo May, ca. 1853]. Folding map with roads, rails, and towns. Table of longitude, latitude, and distance between cities. Outer border contains 16 farm, city, water, and historic scenes, ranging from the aftermath of a hurricane in Oct. 1846, to a view of the port of Havanna, to a cockfight, to slaves working in a tobacco field. Originally created by Pierre Toussaint Frederic Miahle, based largely on an 1848 map by Jose de la Torre. May acquired Miahle’s lithographic stones for this Cuba map and for Miahle’s map of Havanna, and sent them to Germany to be copied. May then sold the Cuba and Havana maps in Cuba as a pocket map. This edition was sold for less than half the price for the Miahle edition. Mahle sued May for copyright infringement. Map itself: 9 5/8” x 13 ½”. Outer edge of outer border: 16 ½” x 22 1/2”. Cuba sheet only (without Havana or covers). Very good, some splitting to folds somewhat within image.
