Emile Bernard (1868 - 1941) French Still Life. Signed lower left. Oil/Board. Sight Size: 23.5 x 17.5 inches. Emile Bernard was born in Lille, France in 1868 and studied at the Academie of Fernand Cormon, where he was a contemporary of Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec. He joined Gauguin at Pont Aven and later claimed it was he who in 1888 introduced Gauguin to the "Synthetist" manner. In 1890 he arranged the first introspective exhibition of Van Gogh's work. He founded the periodical "La Renovation Esthetique" and except for eight years spent teaching in Egypt and the near East, he wrote and published many articles about the painters of his time, including Van Gogh's letters, published in 1893.
