VAN ELVEN, Tetar or TETAR VAN ELVEN (Dutch, circa late 19th century or early 20C): Interior of the Portuguese Synagogue, Amsterdam, Netherlands with Figures, oil/panel, 15 3/4" x 11 5/8" (21 1/8" x 17 1/8" x 2" framed), signed lower left "Tetar v. Elven", affixed with two post-WWII photo postcards of the synagogue interior together with a partially abraded fragment of a printed auction, exhibition or book catalogue entry possibly referring to this composition as (in Dutch) a church interior.

NOTE: Amsterdam has played an important role in Jewish art and society for centuries and we feel the Judaic element of this example lends an additional element of Judaica collector interest.
Provenance: Discovered at a Chabad donation fundraising sale.

In sound as discovered in a charity sale condition. A few minor superficial tiny nicks and scratches at upper right. The work is evenly golden that from our experience sometimes indicates 1950's varnish that has mellowed but regardless it's currently very attractive. Nice lightly impastoed highlights to figures. Frame has some corner and gesso separations and some outer edge corner chipping plus some scattered surface verdigris in recessed areas but is very handsome overall. Entire work a bit dusty. Photo postcards on reverse of panel of synagogue interior are affixed with old drying cellophane tape that is mostly de-adhered and will be shipped loose if they peel any more. There is scraping alongside the printed fragment of what looks like an old auction or exhibition catalogue clipping affixed to the back of the panel. 1st pic framed taken outside a little too blue/2nd pic image without frame taken inside a little too golden. Nice ethereal feel.
