Description
Original 35mm slide features Avril Lund taken by Bob Guccione in 1972.Subject:
Avril Lund was Penthouse magazine's 1974 Pet of the Year. If Penthouse has been good to Avril, then Avril - with her indomitable 40-24-36.5 configuration - has been good to Penthouse. Her March 1973 layout brought in the highest percentage sale of any issue that year, and her subsequent personal appearance tour attracted record crowds everywhere. Perhaps more than any other Pet of the Year before her, Avril's background as a former Sunday school teacher, psychiatric nurse, and itinerant folksinger has made it possible for her to communicate with people on a variety of different levels. "It would be foolish of me to say that I was really happy as a nurse. I enjoyed the work intellectually, but I guess I wasn't cut out for the intense emotional strain that goes with taking care of handicapped people. You're not supposed to become involved with psychiatric patients, because it impairs your objectivity. I found it impossible to ignore either them or the remarkably private and tragic little worlds in which they lived. Teaching Sunday school was something else. I liked working with children, which later convinced me that psychiatric nursing might be equally, if not more, gratifying. Folk singing, like teaching or nursing, was another way of communicating and even stressing fundamental human values in a kind of naive but direct context. I still sing and accompany myself on the guitar, but I do it strictly for fun and strictly for friends."Photographer:
In 1965, Bob Guccione, a struggling artist with an entrepreneurial imagination, started a magazine called Penthouse. Due to his lack of resources, Guccione personally photographed most of the models for the magazine's early issues. He spent long hours, and sometimes, several days, to complete a photo shoot. Although he had no professional training, Guccione applied his knowledge of painting to his photography, establishing the diffused, soft focus look that would become one of the trademarks of the magazine's pictorials. These images offered more sexually explicit content than other gentlemans magazines of the era, establishing Penthouse as a well known name amongst its competitors.Featured Video:
