Description: A pair of opera glasses made of brass. Barrels are covered with select pieces of mother of pearl. The eye pieces are Mop also and Hallmarked on left, "Vendome Paris", right side, Jacob Vander Zanden Green Bay Wis.". The front framework is engraved, "MM Dec-25-04".


History: Place Vendome is only a very short distance from the Place de I’Opera. These glasses were likely used there. Opera glasses, also known as theater binoculars or Galilean binoculars, are compact, low-power optical magnification devices, usually used at performance events, whose name is derived from traditional use at opera performances. Magnification power below 5x is usually desired in these circumstances in order to minimize image shake and maintain a large enough field of view. A magnification of 3x is normally recommended. The design of many modern opera glasses of the ornamental variety is based on the popular lorgnettes of the 19th century.

Good working mechanics. Clean clear lenses. No chips or loss of mother of pearl. Some tarnish to brass surface. Several small areas of black paint loss on rim of field lenses.
