Duodecimo (5.25"x 8.5") c1860. Four volumes in contemporary half leather over marbled boards with leather corners. Spine with 5 raised, gilt decorated bands, gilt author/title on blindstamp ruled title block to second compartment, vol# in gilt on title block in fourth. Vol I has loss to head of spine and thrid compartment and band, front joint tender. Vol II has loss to head of spine (approx. 1/2 top compartment) and small loss to bottom compartment. Vols III, IV with loss to head of spine. Covers bumped and rubbed with minor loss to corners. All edges deckled red. Early ownership ink stamp "Jas. Nicholl Phillips" to front free flyleaf and bottom edge of each volume. Multiple full page plates and folding maps. According to Wikipedia, in reference to Josephus on Jesus, "The extant manuscripts of the writings of the 1st-century Romano-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus include references to Jesus and the origins of Christianity. Josephus' Antiquities of the Jews, written around 93–94 AD (nearly 25 years after the first known Gospel, Mark, dated around 70 AD), includes two references to the biblical Jesus Christ in Books 18 and 20 and a reference to John the Baptist in Book 18."
