Description
Italian, late 18th/early 19th century. A Neoclassical style giltwood carved triple back settee or canape, each medallion shaped back having a laurel carved frame surmounted with ribbon tied cresting, over a reverse serpentine seat covered in white upholstery, the incurvate arms and apron imbricated and raised on turned, tapered and fluted legs. Approximate height 40.75”, width 66.3”, seat depth 22.5”, seat height 17.5”
Condition
Structurally sound and intact. There is slight gapping at joint where the arm joins back on proper right. There are plates with screws added to the backs for additional support (see image #9). Shrinkage at joints/seams. Scattered chips and nicks with gilt loss as would be expected with age and usage. Old worming evidence; not significant. Evidence of old caning to the oval backsides. Back center legs with chips and loss.
