Description
Rare and Fine Glazed Redware Jug, Maine origin, early to mid 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with footed base and tooled spout with semi-rounded lip, decorated with vertically-sponged columns of manganese over a mottled salmon-colored ground with cream accents. Excellent color. The use of manganese sponging in this manner on New England redware is most unusual. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignors' parents decades ago. Old, amateur restoration to handle. Base chips. Wear to top edge of spout. H 10 1/2".
