Description
Highly carved ceremonial or ‘Chief’s Staff’ from the Solomon Islands, South Pacific. Decorated with shell inlay and animal figures. Early to mid 20th century. With a knobbed handle and the shaft inlaid with iridescent carved shells. A carving of a snake eating a bird is wrapped around the lower section of the cane. The center section has a tortoise with inlaid eyes, and two crocodiles also with inlaid eyes. Old patina.
