Description
Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican Formative Period, Guerrero State, Mexico, Xochipala culture, ca. 13th to 10th century BCE. A pair of hand-molded pottery figures, one an older woman, wearning a large, leaf-like necklace, and standing with her hands folded before her; her feet are positioned in a natural standing pose. The second figure is of indeterminate sex and wears elaborate ornamentation; it stands in a similar posture, with hands clasped at its stomach but has a more abstract face. These figures, while rare, are noted for their naturalistic poses and attention to detail, despite their early date in the Mesoamerican ceramic tradition. Their connection to the Olmec is unclear. Size of largest: 2.25" W x 6.5" H (5.7 cm x 16.5 cm)
