Possibly unique circular celluloid badge with brass bezel with trigate portraits of Theodore Roosevelt, Charles W. Fairbanks, and James E. March. Badge suspended from a satin U.S. flag ribbon on a stamped brass and celluloid hanger reading, "Honorary President." Badge imprinted at top "James E. March" and titled below his portrait "Our Leader." Bottom reads, "New York 1904 / Complimentary Excursion, Greenwood Lake, Sept.10, 1904 / The Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, N.J." March was a alternate New York Delegate to the National Republican Convention of 1900 and New York candidate for the 13th District to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1914. March was born Antonio Maggio in Italy, and later changed his name. Ultimately he became a popular and influential labor contractor for the Erie Railroad system. As the Italian immigrant population began it rapid growth, March employed hundreds of thousands. Through fair treatment of his labor force March gained faithful followers and emerged as a leader of New York States Italian-American population. This clout brought him into high ranking Republican circles as a man of importance. He is credited with almost single-handedly bringing about the establishment of the Columbus Day holiday in New York State.
