Description
Likely Chinese, likely 20th century. A finely carved mottled brown soapstone figure of a reclining Pu-Tai (Chinese: Hotei) or Happy Buddha, the plump male figure depicting lying on one side with open robes donning a string of leaves around his neck, holding a bundle of peaches (a symbol of longevity) in one hand, and a coin in alternate hand set before a good luck frog. T stone to a fitted hardwood base with carved foliate motif. Overall height approximately 4", width 8", depth 3.75".
Condition
Dirt and grime throughout; would benefit from light cleaning. Hairlines, possibly inherent to material, to belly,left arm and upper back of figure. Each tight and not distracting. Scattered abrasions to underside commensurate with shelf contact. Base with various surface scratches commensurate with shelf use.
