Description
Fine Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "X", attributed to Dave, Lewis Miles Stony Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, large-sized, highly-ovoid jar with rounded rim and applied lug handles, the surface covered in a greenish alkaline glaze with darker streak descending from the upper half. Tooling below rim executed with a multi-pronged tool. Incised "X" at shoulder, a marking documented on the work of the enslaved Edgefield, SC potter, Dave. Attributed to Dave several years ago by the Ferrells. Appealing form and glaze. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc. April 10, 2010, Lot #58; Charlton Hall Galleries, West Columbia, SC. Hairlines throughout much of surface, including some on underside. 5 1/4" hairline from rim, along with two other much shorter hairlines from rim. Small handle chip. H 15 1/4".
