Description

A GREEK RELIEF CARVED PARCEL GILT POLYCHROME GESSO AND WOOD ICON OF THE ENTHRONED VIRGIN OF PASSION, 17/18TH CENTURY, the foliate leaf frame to a beaded liner centered by a medium relief image of Mary Mother of Jesus seated in an arched throne with ball finials, wearing a red hooded beautifully draped and folded cloak embracing the Christ Child, wearing a folded cloth, to her cheek, both haloed, and flanked by winged angels. Height: 15 1/2" Width: 13" Provenance: Estate of the late Charles A. and Betti F. Saunders, Houston, Texas.

Condition

The icon has consistent losses to the gesso and paint, with three large cracks in the upper half of the image, and some very mild exposure to woodworm noted mostly at back.
