Description
Bronze with fire-gilding, inlay, Tibet. ca. 16th to 17th cent.
This small but remarkably heavy, entirely gilded bronze figure presents the White Tara, Sitatara, a transcendental bodhisattva who embodies absolute purity. All details of this outstandingly well crafted figure have been executed with great care, the decoration finely engraved. Their most prominent feature are the Seven Eyes located on the palms, soles of the feet and forehead. They are the expression of supernatural wisdom which sees everything and which nothing escapes. Here, Sitatara sits in the lotus position on a lotus pedestal, wearing decorative necklaces which fall over her breasts, jewelry on her arms, legs and ears, as well as a tall decorative element on her head. The lower hand is in the position of varadamudra (wish granting), the other in that of demon dispelling, karanamudra. Though lotus blossoms and nimbus are missing, the splendidly gilded bronze with inlay rubies (?) is in otherwise very good condition.
