Description
Art Nouveau WMF Silver Plated Pewter & Tapered Green Bohemian Glass Claret Jug - This stunning, antique piece was made in the early 1900's by famous German metal foundry, Wrttembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF). The piece was made using green Bohemian glass of tapered form, mounted in silver electroplated pewter. The jug has a Jugendstil (also known as Art Nouveau) style, which was then the most fashionable type of decorative art within that time period. It is ornamented with swirling floral decoration around the base and scrolling up the handle and hinged stopper, which are actually braids of hair originating from the female figures head. The female figure is at the base on either side of the glass vessel, and is very much in the style of Alphonse Mucha. The piece is fully hallmarked underneath, with the "WMF" maker's mark, "EP" (electro-plated), "I/O" (means normal silver coating), and "as" (meaning antique finish). The piece is in good condition, and measures 16"H x 7"W (diameter of base).
