Item Details
Description
Northern Greece, Thracian, ca. 800 BCE. One half of an enormous bronze spectacle-shaped fibula (brooch). The spectacle, or double spiral, fibula (brooch) is created from a single thin strap of bronze twisted around itself. The design of these items was remarkably persistent, and the style dates back to the 13th century BCE. They have been found all over Southern Europe -- mostly in the Balkans and south of the Danube and as far afield as Poland, Switzerland, as well as the western Mediterranean. They were often buried with their owners. Custom stand. Size: 5.875" W x 5.25" H (14.9 cm x 13.3 cm); 6.375" H (16.2 cm) on stand

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
