Chinese Late Yuan / Early Ming Blue and White Porcelain Jar. The under glazed bulbous body, decorated with hand-painting in cobalt blue underglaze with stylized floral blooms within foliate cartouche, interspersed by further tendril foliate. The geometrical pattern and floral motifs banded to the neck, shoulder and foot. A characteristic ‘heaped and piled effect’, the underglaze cobalt blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. This inadvertently gave texture, energy and shading to the design. The glaze appearance on the blue decoration resembled the texture of an orange peel "ju-pi" (chu-p'i) or a chicken skin. Elegantly displayed upon a carved hardwood stand. The glaze terminated slightly before the foot rim, revealed the pale-creme ground with burnt orange and darker spots in the firing with some white glazed spots. Initiated conjugated mark between lower and upper body can be seen from uneven surface along the shoulder.
The underside left unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground with grayish and darker spotted firing marks, with edge-cut foot rim.
