Chinese Yuan porcelain brush washer delicately potted in a deep vessel body, flat base gently everted slightly waisted sides. The interior hand painted in Chinese MoCai graisalle painting of a hare standing on a landscape scene, beneath stylized ruyi clouds, enclosed within a double fine rings comforming the cavetto. Bordered to the outer rim with scrolling meander ribbon. The exterior with array of Lotus blooms and tendril foliate. The under side base remain unglazed, revealed the creme-white ground with grayish-dark speckles firing marks during kiln process. A characteristic ‘heaped and piled effect’, the underglaze grayish-aubergine concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. This inadvertently gave texture, energy and shading to the design. A Rabbit is associated with longevity, and is usually pictured on its hind legs under the cassia tree mixing the elixir of immortality on the moon.
