Description

Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Hemba/Luba, mid 20th century CE. A very striking, carved wood male standing in the traditional pose of a power figure, holding his arms on his lower distended abdomen in a confident manner, displaying fearlessness and authority. He resembles the Hemba Singiti (ancestor) figures, though with a hairstyle that departs from the more usual cruciform motif. His visage presents a serene expression with finely delineated, elegant facial features, and he wears an elaborate coiffure, pulled back into twin conical lobes with finely incised cross-hatched detailing, that continues around the chin. The sculpture also presents a consistent, rich black glossy patina. Custom stand. Size: 7.375" W x 17.875" H (18.7 cm x 45.4 cm); 20.625" H (52.4 cm) on the stand

The Hemba have traditionally memorialized distinguished ancestors (warriors, chiefs, and heads of lineages) in sculpted wooden figures (singiti) created to serve as vessels for their spirits. In effect, the Hemba created visual genealogical records, and these figures were tended to by a designated member called a Fumu Mwalo who arranged them in the chronological order in which they lived. This individual honored the singiti with periodic animal sacrifices, and in return, the ancestors were thought to protect their descendants.

The population of the Hemba peoples numbers around 80,000. Residing on the right bank of the Lualaba River west of Lake Tanganyika, the Hemba have been strongly influenced by the Luba, their southern neighbors. Socio-politically, the Hemba are divided into large clans led by a hereditary leader known as the "Fumu Mwalo," who watches over ancestral figures and administers justice. Their art has only been distinguished from that of the Luba since the late 20th century. For this reason, many works in museums and collections have had to be reclassified.
