Dormation, Russia Moscow-Palech, 19th century, tempera on wooden board, size 35.5 x 30.5 cm. The moment Mother of God died, Christ appears to take her soul. The feast of the Dormation is celebrated on the 15 of august. According to a legend the twelve apostles were present at the moment Mother of God died: Peter and Paul (†ca. 67), Simon Zelotes, Philip (1st C), Evangelist John the Theologian (†early 2nd C.), Holy Apostle (of the Seventy) and Evangelist Luke (1st C), Evangelist Matthew (†60), James son of Zebedee (†44), Holy Apostle (of the Seventy) and Evangelist Mark (†63), Andrew the First-Called (†62). Also Hieromartyr Dionysius the Areopagite, Bishop of Athens and Apostle [of the Seventy, †96] and Hieromartyr Hierotheos the Bishop of Athens [Ierofey, 1st C.] on sides. At the lower part of the icon a non believer called Jephonias tries to touch the sacred bier. The Archangel Michael cut of his hands. When Jephonias converted to Christianity his hands were restored. In Russia, the Dormition of the Mother of God became an important feast. Condition: authentic icon in original condition. Provenance: private collection Germany.
