Birth of Christ, Russia, century, tempera on wooden board, size 36 x 30.5 cm. The Mother of God is shown seated in a cave in front of a rocky landscape. The hills act as natural divisions between the represented scenes. On her right lies Christ in a manger wrapped in white bands. At the right upper corner an angel warns the three kings that they shouldn’t return to Herod because of his intentions to kill the Jesus, whom he sees as a rival. On the left beside the birth scene the three wise kings presenting their gifts to Christ. They gave the Child gifts of gold as a king, frankincense as God and myrrh that was used to anoint dead bodies before burial.At the lower left Joseph who is seated in thought; the old man before him is sometimes interpreted as a devil disguised as a shepherd, trying to arouse doubt to Joseph if he is the true father. At the lower right a nurse measures the temperature of the water with her hand before putting Christ in the washbasin. The authenticity of every icon is guaranteed.
