A very rare old Toma peoples mask from Sierra Leone, West Africa. A carved wooden mask with strong angular cheeks and very interesting treatment to the mouth. Bold linear incised designs and a very well worn back and interior suggesting actual field use. Such masks appear in educational performances that teach young boys, who have not yet been circumcised, the value and responsibilities of adulthood. Measures 13 x 7.5 inches ( 19 inches tall on professional custom display stand that is included with purchase. Ex private Philadelphia collection.
