Description
Of high quality, the walrus grips retain their gilt binding, the faceted steel pommel, guard wrought of fine Persian black wootz, and tangbands all lavishly inlaid in gold flowering vinework. The exceptionally long, broad, single-edged, curved blade finely chiseled with interlocking Timurid trefoils at the right forte and a narrow fuller at the spine on each side, and forged of rare Kara Taban brilliant Persian black wootz wrought in a clear ladder pattern, and chiseled at the right forte with a circular cartouche with scalloped border containing a lion with the sun rising over its shoulder, surmounted by two further cartouches, the first containing the name and title of Shah Abbas of Iran, ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET (r. 1588-1629,) the second reading, WORK OF ASSAD ALLAH. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with chiseled steel chape. 17th century. Wear to velvet, suspension bands lacking. Overall length 101.6cm. Condition II
