Item Details
Description
[Coverdale, Diglot New Testament]. THE NEWE TESTAMENT BOTH IN LATINE AND ENGLYSHE. Southwarke: James Nicolson, [1538]. 4to bound in 8s (205 x 139mm.) A-Z8, Aa-Vv8. Wanting the six leaves of prelims which includes the title (provided here in facsimile), dedication, and almanac. Text in double columns (Latin and English.) 19th c. paneled calf, front board detached and rear hinge cracked, with several 19th c. blank leaves bound at front and back (done by binder to better protect text). First page with toning and soiling, a few instances of marginal chips (no loss), small pin-hole worming in places throughout though heaviest near front (occasionally obscuring a letter, not affecting legibility), small marginal water-stains to seven leaves near end, a small number of early ink notations, final three leaves with marginal repairs (no loss of text), else the occasional minor stain or thumbing, overall clean and Very Good. A relatively tall copy with wider margins than typically seen. ************************* The second quarto edition of Coverdale's diglot Testament. The first was printed in the same year, also by Nicolson, but Coverdale was rather unhappy with the number of errors and set out to print an edition in Paris. But Nicolson, on his own account, published this second corrected edition, and while many errors were corrected, many still remained such as errors in page numbering. One revision present here which is often cited (and which Herbert cites) is in Matthew 26, C, where the text reads "before the cocke do crowe" as opposed to the earlier "before the cock synge." [Herbert 38]
