Hesshaimer wrote an autobiographical description of his activity as a war painter as an officer and draftsman in the kuk-Kriegspressequartier. He consistently describes his fellow artists as productive and industrious, but not one: Carl Leopold HollitzerThis would have been a "prosperous bohemian" but "lazy and malicious". "Most of all he sat in cabarets, where he sang songs of the Landsknechts, or in coffee houses, where he caricatured his surroundings on paper napkins and beer mats in a snappy manner." About the zeal of Hesshaimers and others joked on the other hand Hollitzer, so he is asked at a lunch to Hesshaimer He replied: "Yes, he has to draw a sheet quickly before the soup, otherwise she will not taste it." Hesshaimers drawings from the war go sometimes in the caricature , although by no means the biting character of the work Hollitzers respectively.
