Item Details
Description

Details: This illuminated address was presented to philanthropist D.J. O'Neill of Dublin to commemorate his decades of public service in England. The first pages feature a photograph signed by Queen Alexandra of Denmark and dated October 15, 1914 with a copy of an official letter addressed to O'Neill verifying that the Queen "has been graciously pleased to send you the enclosed signed photograph of herself."

There are several other signed photographs, including one of Earl Frederick Roberts, a British military veteran who "served in the Indian Rebellion, the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War before leading British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the position was abolished in 1904." [Courtesy Wikipedia]

Another photograph appears to be signed by the Bishop of Oxford at the time, Charles Gore. According to Wikipedia, Gore was "one of the most influential Anglican theologians of the 19th century" and helped "reconcile the church to some aspects of biblical criticism and scientific discovery while remaining Catholic in his interpretation of the faith and sacraments." [Courtesy Wikipedia]

The illuminated text appears on vellum pages and celebrates O'Neill's work at the Aston Hall and Park for the People and the Birmingham and Midland Institute. Included with the text are several pages of antique newsprint and personal correspondence about O'Neill and his life in public service. O'Neill's family crest, containing an image of "The Red Hand of Ireland," appears on the last page of the book.

Additionally, the text features a full page of signatures from persons including: Thomas Barclay; Frank E. Shearman; W.P. Thomas; Florence Stevens; A.J. Claridge; Walter Powell; Ernest Sandford; and more.

Please attend our live sale to view this text and other interesting ephemera in person.

Condition / Notes: This volume shows exceptionally well and displays only some typical indications of age and wear including light toning and creasing. The separate papers also show some typical signs of wear like toning, creasing, and marginal chipping.
