Description
Japanese Woodblock Print 1905, first edition, pencil signed, numbered (19), and dated by Bertha Lum, self-carved and self-printed by Lum, printed on thin tissue paper
SIZE IN INCHES: 4.6 x 9
BERTHA LUM (1869-1954) was born in Iowa in 1869, and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago. She traveled to Japan on her honeymoon in 1903 when she was 34, and obtained a few tools and materials for woodblock printmaking, along with some rudimentary advice on the process. Upon her return to America she started producing her own prints, and made a second short trip five years later for further studies. Lum then returned in 1911, bringing her family with her, and started hiring carvers and printers to produce her designs.
