Description
Known as the Tomas Pieto Il Merito Spanish Peace medal, this large size(2 and 3/4"wide)solid sterling silver medal showing Carlos III, (6 troy oz total) was given to the American Indians in the 18th century by the Spanish.The ribbon measures 16.5" long.(From the Lewis and Clark site):"The silver Al Mérito medal, both large and small, was gifted to the American Indian by the Spanish. They were widely dispersed through most of the present United States including the Louisiana Territory and Pacific Northwest regions explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.The obverse is a portrait of the Spanish king with the text: CARLOS III • REY DE ESP • EMP • DE LAS INDIAS (Charles III, King of Spain, Emperor of the Indies). The reverse is the text AL MERITO (Merit)".___From the Estate of Dr.Milton Horowitz, NYC.
Condition
Small dents to the face of the medal on both sides.The ribbon is 20th century.
