An Antique Chinese Red Silk Embroidery with Dragon Dance
19th century, finely crafted embroidery using a myriad of stitch techniques including the Peking knot or "Forbidden Stitch," upon bright red silk is embroidered a joyous scene with the emperor in the center under a pavilion watching a dragon and foo lion dance performance perhaps representing a Chinese New Year's celebration, above and below are golden thread floral motifs, above an elegant scene of plum blossoms and birds against a sage green silk ground, framed under glass, not examined outside of the frame.
DOA 15.75 x 45 in.
This type of knot is particular to the rich Chinese silk embroidery and gained its name "forbidden stitch" because this stitch became forbidden due to the blindness it caused from such eye strain it took to complete, also because the knots’ association to the home to the Emperor, "The Forbidden City."
