Description
A Meiji period bisque porcelain sculpture of a sitting cat with its eyes closed. This is a rare and beautiful example of one of the most famous of Hirado porcelain productions; the sitting sleeping cat. Modeled in unglazed, bisque porcelain with great detail, one can see ripples in the fur, the pads on the bottoms of the paws and the serene smile of relaxation. You can find an illustration of this Hirado design on page 160 of figural Japanese export ceramics by Nancy N. Schiffer.
