Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 520 to 480 BCE. A striking skyphos (wine cup), highly decorated via the black-figure technique with incised and added red and white fugitive painted details. The iconography features the same scene on both sides - a pair of magnificent sphinxes flanking a central figure. Behind each sphinx is an abstract spirit figure, and just above the base, a band of frets adds to the decorative program. Size: 7.625" W handlespan x 3.625" H (19.4 cm x 9.2 cm)

The abbreviation "CHC Group" stands for "Chariot Courting Group", which was part of the Heron Class, as described by Beazley. Their work was popular and was even copied in Boeotian art. There is a very similar skypos, also attributed to the CHC Group, in the Art Institute of Chicago collection (accession number 1929.943) - http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/4183

Another skyphos by the CHC Group sold for GBP 5,625 (US$ 8,600 or € 6,500) at auction (Christie's Sale 5487 of 29 April 2010, lot 52) and another one for US$ 18,750 (€ 14,500) (Christie's Sale 2056 of 9 December 2008, lot 83).
