ALPHONSE MUCHA (JULY 1860-MARCH 1939) "JOB" LITHOGRAPH,1898. Mucha’s famous posters, including his most successful one designed for Sara Bernhardt, graced thousands of Paris buildings and billboards in the late 1890s. He produced lithographs for the JOB cigarette paper advertisement in 1896. Ã,‘JOB’ is a trademark for the Joseph Bardou Company; logo in background. Note the long abundant tendrils of hair for the glamorous female smoker who enjoys the aroma of tobacco. This poster may be his best-known advertising poster. In 1904 Mucha left Paris for New York, the first of six visits between 1904 and 1913. He was famous in America, known for his commercial work, but mainly for Sarah Bernhardt illustrations. Mucha’s work inspired architects and designers around the turn of century; he popularized the Art Nouveau style of 1890 to 1910. Original Art Nouveau oak frame. Purchased from Sotheby’s in 1968 at auction. Height: 29 & 20 in. by Width: 24 & 16 in. ACTUAL POSTER SIZE 17 7/8" WIDE BY 22 1/4"H.
