Item Details
Description
A pair of locally important 19th century cast iron posts in black paint, with lavish decorations with connections to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt family in Hyde Park NY. They are decorated with pear shaped acanthus finials, over various turnings including rope twist and other acanthus designs. 58"H x 8 1/2" square base. Very good condition with the addition of a newer iron base. Provenance: Reportedly found in the home of Isaac Roosevelt, named "Rosedale" on the Hudson River in Hyde Park NY, who built the estate sometime in the early 19th century - Isaac was FDR's grandfather (1790-1863). The estate remained in the family until 1954 when the property was subdivided for private homes and purchased by a family member of consignor. Items originally left in "Rosedale" were later moved by purchaser to a barn on the family farm in Kinderhook NY, where they have been stored for many years.
