Item Details

Description

A very rare George Jones Majolica Butterfly Pomade Box and cover. Shaped as a butterfly, the sides molded with white flowering violets against characteristic mottled greens and browns so typically ememplying the style of lead glazes associated with the factory. The cover formed a richly coloured peacock butterfly sipping nectar from a single violet, with a turquois interior. Dated 1874, impressed GJ monogram and molded registration lozenge. A similar rare example illustrated, Karmason and Stacke, Majolica, pg. 102. Original cost was $14,000 on November 2nd, 2006. 3 7/8w x 3 1/8d x h?
