Description
A Rare Yoruba peoples mask from Nigeria, West Africa. This is a very fine carved wooden helmet mask with painted kaolin clay pigments and tall rabbit like ears and the most beautiful carved face I have ever seen on a Yoruba Egungun style mask. Egungun masks are used in conjunction with elaborate masquerade textile costumes to honour ancestors and to celebrate the positive influences of ancestral spirits on the community. During the annual festival the masqueraders become possessed by ancestor spirits with the aim of visiting their families and loved ones before journeying back to the spirit world. Measures 18 x 9 inches ( 24 inches tall on professional custom display stand.) 6 lb shipping weight. Ex Amyas Naegele Gallery, New York City, New York.
